Rekha worked at a local government office in Hyderabad. Her life was a mosaic of deadlines, bus rides, raising two children, and caring for her aging parents. Every morning at 6:00 AM, she’d make a cup of chai, sit by the small balcony, and watch the neighborhood wake up—the dogs barking, vendors shouting, pressure cookers hissing.
It was the only moment of the day that was hers.
One day, after a particularly hard week—an argument with her husband, bills piling up, her mother’s blood pressure acting up—Rekha sat with her tea and broke down. Not loudly. Just quietly. A tear slipped into the steam of her cup.
In that stillness, with nothing left to fix or plan, she remembered something—not a memory, but a sensation.
It was like finding an old photograph of herself she didn’t know existed. A part of her that was untouched by stress, unshaken by worry. A place in her chest that felt neither burdened nor busy. It didn’t speak, but it felt… whole.
Most of us live on the surface of ourselves. We go through routines, juggle roles, respond to calls, follow rules. We think we are these roles—father, wife, worker, student. We think we are the body, or the mind, or our Facebook bio.
But deep within—beneath the habits, beyond the fears—is the core.
The saints called it the Self. The Sufis called it the Beloved. The modern world calls it presence, essence, or flow. It has no name really, but you feel it when you stop pretending.
It’s the you that was there before anyone told you who to be.
Children live from this place naturally. Watch a child playing with a stick—fully immersed, no performance, no agenda. Just being. That is the core in action.
But we forget. Layers of expectation, guilt, anxiety, ambition—all bury that simple flame.
And yet, it never leaves. It waits. Even now, it waits.
Rekha didn’t become a monk. She still made spreadsheets, cooked dinner, and chased after buses. But something shifted. She no longer looked outside for validation. She didn’t get as rattled. She began saying “no” without guilt. She laughed more. She even danced in the kitchen when no one was watching.
It wasn’t a grand transformation. It was a return.
To that cup of tea. To that quiet knowing. To that self within the self.
And from that day on, she lived not perfectly, but truly.
The core is not somewhere you reach. It’s somewhere you return to.
It is not found in silence—it is the silence.
Not the absence of noise, but the presence that holds it all.
And once you taste it, even for a moment, life is never quite the same again.
