There’s a story from Kerala about a little boy named Ishan who was terrified of thunder.
Each time a storm rolled in, he would run under the cot, cover his ears, and tremble. His mother, calm and grounded, would sit nearby lighting a small lamp as the wind howled outside. She never forced him to come out. She never scolded his fear. She simply lit the lamp, sang an old lullaby, and waited.
One night, the storm was fierce. Thunder cracked like angry gods. Ishan had hidden as usual—but something was different. Between the thunderclaps, he heard the lullaby more clearly than ever before. It wasn’t loud. It was soft. But it didn’t tremble like he did. It was still.
He peeked out.
There she was. Her back straight, her eyes closed, and the flame steady despite the gusts outside. He crawled toward her—not because the storm had passed, but because her stillness made it seem as if it had already lost its power.
That night, curled beside his mother, Ishan learned his first lesson in inner peace: it is not the absence of chaos—it is the presence of stillness in the middle of it.
We often believe peace comes when everything is calm. But life never waits for that. Storms come—in the form of loss, illness, conflict, pressure. The winds howl outside and within. And in our attempt to control the chaos, we get swept into it.
But what if peace is not outside us, but something we cultivate like that lamp—tended with patience, anchored in stillness, glowing despite the noise?
The ancient yogis didn’t retire to the Himalayas because they feared the world. They did so to test their stillness, to discover if it was real. And many returned to the world—not to escape the storm, but to carry their calm into it.
In Buddhist lore, there is a metaphor: the mind is like a muddy pond. If we keep stirring it—trying to fix, analyze, control—it only becomes more clouded. But if we sit still, even for a moment, the mud begins to settle on its own. Clarity arises not from force, but from quiet.
In modern life, this is not easy. Phones buzz. Deadlines scream. The world thrives on urgency. But even here, peace can live—between two breaths, in a moment of acceptance, in a silent glance with a friend, or in the act of pausing before you react.
One day, Ishan grew up and faced storms much bigger than thunder—rejection, heartbreak, uncertainty. But whenever he felt overwhelmed, he would close his eyes and remember the warm glow of the lamp, his mother’s song, and the truth it had sung:
Peace is not given by the world. It is remembered by the soul.
